Job Description:
Our client is seeking a SQL DBA to provide hands-on production database support and serve as the primary point of contact for escalated data and application issues. Approximately 95% of this role will involve production support and hands-on SQL rather than traditional business requirements gathering. This individual will investigate escalated issues, work directly within live production databases, write and execute SQL queries and updates, validate changes, and own issues through resolution. The ideal candidate combines strong SQL skills with exceptional judgment, attention to detail, and an understanding of the risks associated with making changes in a production environment.
Responsibilities:
- Serve as the primary owner for escalated production database and data-related issues.
- Receive escalations from Tier 1 Support and independently investigate the underlying problem.
- Work directly within live production databases to troubleshoot application and data issues.
- Write and execute SQL queries to investigate production issues and identify root causes.
- Perform SQL updates in production when appropriate and fully validated.
- Validate data before and after production changes to confirm accuracy and ensure the issue has been resolved.
- Determine the appropriate course of action when support requests are incomplete, unclear, or missing necessary information.
- Ask appropriate questions and investigate available data before making production changes.
- Stop and escalate when a production change cannot be made with complete confidence.
- Own issues throughout the full lifecycle, from initial escalation through investigation, resolution, validation, and closure.
- Clearly communicate findings, changes, and resolutions back to Support and other stakeholders.
- Handle ad-hoc data requests and reporting needs as required.
- Maintain appropriate documentation around issues, changes, and resolutions.
- Work independently as the primary point person supporting this function.
- Collaborate with technical and nontechnical stakeholders to resolve production issues efficiently and safely.
Required Qualifications:
- Strong hands-on SQL experience.
- Experience writing complex SQL queries independently.
- Hands-on experience making SQL updates directly within live production databases.
- Strong production support or application support experience.
- Experience independently troubleshooting database and data-related issues.
- Ability to investigate unclear technical issues and determine the appropriate next steps.
- Experience validating data and application behavior before and after production changes.
- Strong understanding of the risks and severity associated with modifying production data.
- Excellent judgment and discipline when working in live production environments.
- Ability to recognize when additional information or escalation is necessary rather than making an uncertain production change.
- Experience owning escalated issues from initial investigation through resolution.
- Experience working within a ticketing or case-management system.
- Strong attention to detail and accountability.
- Ability to independently own a technical support function with minimal oversight.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to explain technical issues and resolutions clearly to less technical Support teams and end users.
- Collaborative, proactive, and comfortable taking initiative.
- Experience supporting a Tier 1 or Help Desk team as an escalation point.
- Application support experience.
- Experience serving as the sole database support resource or primary point of contact for a team.
- Experience with Salesforce Service Cloud or another ticketing/case-management platform.
- ServiceNow or Jira experience.
- Experience with reporting and ad-hoc data requests.
- Familiarity with change-management processes.
- Familiarity with data governance and security controls.
- Experience working directly with clients or business users.
