Job Description: The Future Wireless North America (FWNA) group within our Research and Innovation (R&I) organization is responsible for leading our North American next-generation wireless research projects. Our charter is to identify future technology needs, develop and learn from proof-of-concept prototypes, and innovate around a system focus. Today this team is at the leading edge of 6G research. Job Summary: We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated wireless systems expert who has a deep understanding of wireless technology and a record of research accomplishments. The selected candidate will define system-level concepts, propose and initiate research on innovative ideas, support complex system simulations, and guide architectures for proof-of-concept prototypes.
Day to Day:
Looking for more broad systems knowledge - looking for radio access networks
Looking for more of the MAC & RLC layer - (radio link control)
Good for them to have some understanding of the physical later
Usually when people are level 2 / 3 - they have some understanding of the Physical layer
Someone who has good understanding of PHY
Moving towards 6G
Not looking for the people who are doing the implementation - more so the people who are doing the research that is leading up to the technology
Must haves:
Understanding of MAC & RLC Layers
Experience in 4G/5G NR
Research-oriented - developing the system and building it - not implementing
Understanding how to build a cellular system
Experience with current cellular standards
3GPP background
Responsibilities: Identify and innovate on the technology roadmap that will enable 6G system concepts across multiple layers (RRC, SDAP, PDCP, RLC, MAC, PHY) for future 3GPP systems Drive cutting-edge research in future wireless projects such as high-frequency systems, multi-radio multi-connectivity, sidelink evolution, integrated communications, and sensing, device-centric mesh, lean-protocol design, etc. Carry out research in the 3GPP Radio Interface architecture data-plane and control-plane protocols and specifications, and strategies for Radio Resource Management: Participate in group brainstorming meetings Research, analyze, and design radio access network interfaces and protocols for next generation networks Analyze and synthesize 3GPP contributions Evaluate the design using simulation platforms, and/or theoretical analysis Drive tradeoff analysis of various architectures and topologies Document and present the Client wireless technologies and implementations in various forms, such as standards contributions, conference and journal publications, technical white papers, patent applications, etc. Support university and industry collaborations Mentor junior employees Participate in external industry and academic forums that are passionate about building the next generation of wireless
Qualifications: M.S. or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering or related field with 8+ years of work experience in the field of wireless communications. Experience in current cellular standards such as 5G NR or 4G LTE Proven experience with and knowledge of 3GPP 5G NR and/or LTE Advanced layers 2/3 specifications, architectures, and features. Experience in developing forward-looking cellular technology and protocol design is preferred Strong background in two or more of the following: 3GPP control-plane and data-plane protocols (RRC, SDAP, PDCP, RLC, and MAC) 3GPP PHY protocol design Deep understanding of RRM strategies High-frequency cellular system design Understanding of TCP/IP, transport, and application protocols Mesh Networking Dedicated, result-oriented professional with an attitude for getting the job done Willing to take on challenges in a fast-paced and high-pressure environment Strong analytical and research skills along with a proven innovation track record Ability to thrive in an innovative, dynamic, and research-oriented work environment Strong written and verbal communication skills, including strong presentation skills
